The authors state that the Mediterranean diet is mostly plant-based and includes a high consumption of whole-grain, fruit, and vegetables with a moderate consumption of alcohol during meals. Thus, it provides a small amount of saturated fatty acids and a high quantity of antioxidants and fibre. The review highlights that In particular, a moderate consumption of alcohol, as suggested in MD, is associated with a reduced risk of Hashimoto disease, an autoimmune thyroid disease and also a lower risk of thyroid carcinoma.
