A study led by pharmacist Jacqueline Iversen identified that symptoms of hangover are caused by inflammation and not dehydration, as commonly thought. The results of Iversen’s research found that classic symptoms of hangover, such as dizziness, headache, nausea and brain fog, can be prevented by disrupting the body’s inflammatory response with a new drug. The new treatment, SPJ-001, combines a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug and an antihistamine. SPJ-001 was given to participants prior to drinking alcohol and researchers found that hangovers were either “eliminated or reduced.” SPJ-001 has been granted patents in four countries and is pending in an additional eight countries.
